After thinking it over for a week, I called the Pit Barrel Cooker Company and cancelled my order. Now I’m having serious buyers remorse.Īnother bbq forum “rage” is the Ugly Drum Smoker. So that’s why they charge so much for a product that costs them about $70 to make. They gave away seemingly hundreds of the things to cookoff teams, bbq forum webmasters, and bbq website owners. In the meantime, it became clear to me that the “rage” about that cooker was because they had a good marketing plan. But then I noticed that they deducted the purchase from my bank account the same day I ordered it. So I ordered one online, a nice lady called me a few hours later, told me that they were backordered but that it should ship the following week. I decided to go with a Pit Barrel Cooker because it seems to be all the rage on the bbq forums. About a month ago, that smoker went kaput (I’m no electrician), so I had a choice – spend another $400 on another Masterbuilt or come up with something else. I’m old, remember? I’ve had small grills, trailer mounted offset pits, Weber Smokey Mountain pit/grills, gas grills, and for the past three years, a Masterbuilt Electric Smoker. I’ve been barbecuing meat for a long, long time. More on that later but for now, let’s smoke some pork ribs! Although the internal temperature will rise very fast at the beginning of the cook, it will move very slow towards the end.Hey, it’s the weekend! Place approximately 16 Weber Briquettes in your charcoal chimney and light the chimney. Place approximately 70-72 unlit Weber Briquettes to one side of your grill, or two piles of 36 Weber Briquettes to both sides. Weber Briquettes burn long so you won't have to refuel as often! The lit coals will slowly heat up the unlit coals. By adding lit coals on top of unlit coals, you can maintain a low-temperature fire for a long period of time. The best way to maintain a low and steady temperature is by using a process known as the Modified Minion Method. Also, you want to minimize the number of times you open the grill lid because every time you do, you lower the grill temperature and effectively lengthen the amount of time for the cook. Cooking a five-pound pork shoulder can take upwards of 9 hours. That is a long time to keep your kettle grill at an optimal temperature of 250☏. ![]()
